Alaska Class D FM channel finder

Alaska is the one place the FCC still takes applications for new Class D FM stations: noncommercial stations of 10 watts transmitter power or less, filed at any time, no window needed. Enter your site and see which of the 100 FM channels are clear of other stations.

How it works

  • Outside Alaska the FCC takes no new Class D applications; in Alaska it does, at any time (47 CFR 73.512(c)). A Class D station runs no more than 10 watts transmitter power (73.506(a)(1)), and the FCC prefers it on a commercial channel where one works (73.512(a)(1)), so all 100 FM channels are checked.
  • A Class D application is not accepted if its contours overlap the 60 dBu service contour of any other station: its 40 dBu contour on the same channel, its 54 dBu contour one channel away, or its 100 dBu contour two or three channels away (73.509(b)). That includes LPFM stations, translators and pending applications.
  • Your contours use the FCC's F(50,10) curves, or F(50,50) under 16 km (73.509(c)). A channel is ruled out when your site is inside another station's 60 dBu contour, or your contour reaches it along the line between the two sites.
  • Overlap that lies entirely over water doesn't count (73.509(e)); this check doesn't model that, so a ruled-out channel near the coast may still work.

From the FCC's rules (eCFR, October 14, 2026) and station records. For planning; a full engineering study is needed before you file. Not a product of the FCC.
