Podcast Study 2026: lapsed radio listeners can be won back

Lapsed radio listeners aren't gone, study finds

Most podcast listeners who have drifted away from local radio have not left it for good, and the host may be the way to bring them back. That is a central finding of the radio-focused portion of Podcast Study 2026 from Strategic Solutions Research and Point-To-Point Marketing, presented as the closing session of the study's webinar series.

The survey covered 1,205 podcast consumers ages 18 to 54. Of those, 74% listen to local radio weekly or more, and 46% listen daily. The remaining 26%, who tune in less than weekly, are mostly lapsed rather than lost: 75% have listened to local radio before, and 48% still listen at least every few months.

Hosts carry much of the pull. Among radio listeners with a favorite podcast, 81% said the host is a big part of, or the only reason for, their listening. About half of light radio users said they try new podcasts because of the host, including 51% of those who lapsed within the past year, compared with 43% of weekly radio listeners.

Ad load is where lapsed listeners differ most. They skip ads at a higher rate, 59% versus 48% of radio listeners, and 41% skip even when they like the host, compared with 24%. Across all radio listeners, 54% said podcasts carry too many ads and 21% said ads have cut their podcast listening. Host endorsements still work: after one, radio listeners said they were more likely to notice the ad (54%), remember the brand (56%), trust it (49%) and consider buying (46%).

First impressions matter too. Some 55% of radio listeners give a new podcast five minutes or less, with boring or aimless talk at the start the top reason for giving up. Discovery runs through short clips: 65% typically see two or more before trying a new show.

The researchers closed with a six-point playbook for stations: treat talent as the brand and give listeners direct access to hosts, use on-demand and social content to win back lapsed listeners, sell host endorsements and use host reads to carry listeners through breaks, coach production teams to tighten the first minute, post host clips daily on social, and build a funnel of a free VIP club, host email, exclusive content, events and limited series. Among daily radio listeners, 55% said they would definitely join a free VIP club.
