A strong storm system is expected to move into the northern half of the Alaska Panhandle and the northeast Gulf Coast tonight and continue through Tuesday. Beginning tonight for Haines, Skagway, and the two highways, periods of moderate to heavy rain will move over the area. Total rain accumulation are expected to be between 1.5-3.5 inches, with the heaviest rain late Tuesday morning into Tuesday afternoon. While substantial areal flooding is not expected at this time, isolated instances of minor ponding of water in low lying areas are possible. Furthermore, wet snow is possibly on the Klondike Highway near White Pass up to 3 inches through tonight, though warm surface temperatures may hinder these snow totals.

* WHAT...Snow expected. Total snow accumulations between 2 and 6 inches, highest amounts near the mountains. * WHERE...Lower elevations of Anchorage and the Matanuska Valley. * WHEN...From 4 AM to 1 PM AKDT Tuesday. * IMPACTS...Travel could be difficult. Be prepared for slippery roads. Visibilities as low as one half mile possible, including during the morning commute. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Rain will intensify during the overnight hours and change to snow late tonight through early Tuesday morning, with temperatures falling to near freezing. The heaviest snow and highest accumulation will be near the mountains, from the lower Anchorage Hillside to East Anchorage and up the Glenn Highway corridor to Palmer and Sutton. Roads will start out wet and road surface temperatures are still warm (in the upper 30s), but steady moderate snow should be enough to lead to slushy accumulation, especially along neighborhood roads. Snow will change back to rain by late morning in south to west Anchorage, continue northward to the Matanuska Valley in the afternoon. The exact timing of changeover back to rain will greatly impact total snow amounts.

What to do: Slow down and use caution while traveling. For the latest road conditions call 5 1 1 or visit 511.alaska.gov.

* WHAT...Snow expected. Total snow accumulations between 3 and 7 inches. * WHERE...Fairbanks, Fox, Chatanika, Ester and Nenena. * WHEN...From 10 AM Tuesday to 4 PM AKDT Wednesday. * IMPACTS...Travel could be very difficult. Areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Light snow is expected Monday night. Heavier snow is expected Tuesday. There is high uncertainty in the exact location of this heavier snow area. This detail will be crucial in determining which spots get 6 inches or more versus 3 inches or less. A 30 mile change east or west will result in drastic differences. If the area of heavier snow shifts slightly west, heavy snow becomes more likely over the area. If the area of heavier snow shifts slightly east, heavy snow becomes less likely over the area.

About these alerts

  • Straight from the National Weather Service's CAP alert feed (api.weather.gov), refreshed every two minutes. Only actual alerts are shown, not tests or exercises.
  • The EAS code is the event code in the alert's SAME header (for example TOR, SVR, FFW). Alerts the Weather Service doesn't send over EAS, such as most advisories, show "not sent over EAS".
  • Whether your station relays an alert depends on your state EAS plan and how your decoder is set up.

Alert text is from the National Weather Service. Not a product of the NWS or the FCC.
