ATSC publishes revised A/362 DRM practice for ATSC 3.0

ATSC publishes revised ATSC 3.0 DRM practice

The ATSC has published a revised version of A/362, its recommended practice on Digital Rights Management for ATSC 3.0, as A/362:2026-09. The ATSC membership approved the revision on 18 September 2026. The ATSC did not summarize what changed in the new edition.

The update lands while encryption of NextGen TV signals is under scrutiny from receiver makers and viewers. A recommended practice is guidance on how to implement part of the ATSC 3.0 system. It is not a mandatory standard, and it is not an FCC rule.

A second document is still in the works. S34-463r7, a proposed revision of A/343:2026-04 covering captions and subtitles, is out for a membership ballot. Technology group TG3 approved it in a ballot that closed on 3 September 2026. Comments came in during that ballot, and the ATSC said it is still resolving them.

The ATSC has also posted an updated Candidate Standard for B2X System Discovery and Signaling. A Candidate Standard is a draft that has already been through substantial review and is put out so implementers can build to it and send technical feedback. The originating group, TG3/S44, can still revise it during that implementation period.

Engineers at ATSC 3.0 stations, and the vendors that supply them, may want to compare their DRM and caption setups against the current editions as the documents are finalized.
